This thread is a cousin to lodging houses (newsies). The difference here is that this portrays a more endemic situation, rather than one that portrays "home" built for a certain group and for a certain purpose. (boy that's a pseudo mouthful) There are many sources on this subject; keywords like Jacob Riis, old tenements; sites like the Tenement Museum, New Deal, Library of Congress' American Memory; books like Otto Bettman's "The Good Old Times Were Terrible." Here are some misc images I had on that subject that I wove together with Yip Harburg. The last image in the movie comes from a site that has the title "Depressing Facts about Poverty & Kids." And we thought those good/bad old days were in the past.
