Midsummer Night Swing: June 29, 2010

from:
http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/swing-2010

Which coast swings harder? Jazz musicians ceded East Coast/West Coast squabbles to hip-hoppers some time ago, but Midsummer Night Swing's season kickoff is a high-octane rematch that proves old feuds die hard. Ten years ago on a hugely successful tour, hometown Count Basie disciple George Gee and hot L.A. pianist Bill Elliott put the question to the most discerning audiences of all: dancers. The gauntlet has been thrown down once again. Come decide who gets bragging rights.
I didn't stay till the end, but though Elliott's band was excellent I'd vote for Gee. His band played a great version of Hampton's Flying Home.
That's Sigourney Weaver at the 45 second mark. I'm a fan of the woman with the open toed pumps at 2:10. A heavy duty plastic surgery trio at 2:45.

Goodbye Joe

You lost in the 9th with a bad hand good bye, Joe,
With a 4 run lead  and Brox on a last stand, good bye, Joe.
You should have made some changes and now you’ve got to go.
Don't forget that move made you crash land, good bye, Joe.

Good bye, Joe, yes, I understand, I’m trying not to laugh
but if I do, it’s only cause I’ll miss you, one more time, let A-Rod kiss you.

I remember when you left and were balling, good bye, Joe,
Then came a book that rose without warning, good bye, Joe.
Time is full of pay-backs and now you’ve got to go.
And we walked on a LA morning, good bye Joe.

AJ Walks Them In And Sits Right Down

Walk them in, sit right down
AJ, let your losses roll on
Everybody's talkin' 'bout your old way of walkin'
Do you want us to lose our minds?
Walk them in, sit right down
AJ, let your losses roll on
prophetic words from a previous post
When the time comes that I'm feelin angry,
And I'm feelin' ohooooo no- you'll also choke next against dodger blue,
I just sit back and think of you, only,
And the bitterness still comes through.

All About Bocce

Bocce In Crotona

from nycparks
Located at 108 St, 51 Ave, Queens. This triangle honors William F. Moore (1897–1918), a Marine private killed in battle during World War I (1914-1918). A graduate of PS 17, Moore grew up nearby on the corner of 103rd Street and Corona Avenue. Moore enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1917 and was killed in 1918 while serving with the 47th Company, Fifth Regiment at Belleau Wood in France, in one of the bloodiest engagements fought by the United States during the war. A flagstaff base marking a recent renovation commemorates Moore and his valiant sacrifice.
The history of Corona ties intimately to the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1854. When speculators from Manhattan began developing the settlement that year, they planned the streets in accordance with the railroad route. The tiny village was called West Flushing in remembrance of the Flushing Remonstrance, a landmark document drafted by Quakers 200 years earlier that called for religious freedom in America. The town grew quickly in population, and in 1872, the village decided upon a name it could claim as its own. Corona, a Latin term for “crown,” was chosen because the town’s settlers considered their home the corona of all Long Island municipalities.
Corona continued to grow during the boom years of the early 1900s. Its population reached 2,500 by 1898 and 6,200 by 1910, and the introduction of rapid transit in 1917 spurred further growth. Later in the century, Corona boasted several famous residents. The neighborhood was home to the great jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong (1901-1971), who resided here from 1943 to 1971, and it was the fictional setting of the popular 1970s television sitcom “All In The Family.”
This triangle, on the corner of 108th Street and 51st Avenue, was mapped as parkland in 1922 and acquired by the City by condemnation in 1924. A tablet by sculptor James S.J. Novelli commemorates 49 local residents who died in World War I. The tablet, donated by the Corona Heights Civic Association, was dedicated in 1929. Originally known as Corona Heights Triangle, in October 1929 it was renamed to commemorate Moore, reported to be the first neighborhood soldier killed in the war. After 1929 a 40-foot strip of land along 51st Avenue was pared down as part of the widening of the street.
The southern tip of the park commemorates Joseph Lisa, Sr. (1898–1977), who was the Democratic District Leader from Corona from 1950 to 1976. A tree and tablet were placed in the park to honor his work in the community. In 1980 the park was renovated and lights were added, which helped reestablish the birch- and maple-filled park as the nerve center for the neighborhood. Today visitors to the park play bocce, cards, and enjoy Italian ices from the renowned Lemon Ice King of Corona, located nearby.

Coming Into Los Angeles

Coming in from London
From over the pole
Flying in a big airliner
Chickens flying everywhere around the plane
Could we ever feel much finer?
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of keys
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man
There's a guy with a ticket to Mexico
No, he couldn't look much stranger
Walking in the hall with his things and all
Smiling, said he was the Lone Ranger
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of keys
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man
Hip woman walking on a moving floor
Tripping on the escalator
There's a man in the line
And she's blowing his mind
Thinking that he's already made her
Coming in from London
From over the pole
Flying in a big airliner
Chickens flying everywhere around the plane
Could we ever feel much finer?
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in a couple of keys
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man
Coming in from Arizona
From over the sand
Flying in a big airliner
Tired and hurt yanks all over the plane
Winning last night made us feel much finer?
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in some of A-Rods' "teas"
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man
There's a guy with a message for manager Joe
No, he couldn't look much angrier
Walking in the hall with a bad hip flexor and all
Smiling, said he was Alex Avenger
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in some of A-Rods' "teas"
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man
Blond woman walking on a moving floor
Tripping on the escalator
She's got a 3rd basemen in mind
And later she'll be blowing him fine
But soon he'll probably dump her
Coming in from Arizona
From over the sand
Flying in a big airliner
Tired and hurt yanks all over the plane
Winning last night made us feel much finer?
Coming into Los Angeles
Bringing in some of A-Rods' "teas"
Don't touch my bags if you please
Mister Customs Man

The Stars Fell On Arizona Last Night 2

We won tonight's hard fought drama
With Mo giving us some fright
And Yankee stars fell again on Arizona
Last night
A game forgetting any glamor
My eyes held shut at times very tight
And Yankee stars fell again on Arizona
Last night
I never planned in my imagination
A situation would end victoriously
A fairy land where not another batter
Could enter -no bases remained empty
My heart beat just like a hammer
My eyes held shut at times very tight
And Yankee stars fell again on Arizona
Last night

The Stars Fell On Arizona Last Night

We lived our little drama
We kissed in a field of white
And stars fell on Alabama
Last night
I can't forget the glamour
Your eyes held a tender light
While (And) stars fell on Alabama (fractured 'Bama)
Last night
I never planned in my imagination
A situation - so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
And in the center - just you and me
My heart beat (just) like a hammer
(My) Arms wound around you tight
And (While) stars fell on Alabama
Last night

Forget Monday's little drama
Sweet vengeance to the state of racial blight
And Yankee stars fell on Arizona
Last night
Let's put aside the rancor
Of feckless fans who suffer every slight
While Yankee stars fell on Arizona
Last night
I never planned in my frustration
A situation - so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
And in the center -Yankee pride and me
My heart beat (just) like Andy's cutter
I got chills as he led the fight
And (While) Yankee stars fell on Arizona
Last night

Dedicated To AJ Burnett, With Due Respect To Carol

I'm so mad we had this time together,
Just to have a loss, or see you toss so wrong.
Seems we just got started and before you know it
In no time for our hopes to win we say,'So long.'

There's a time you put aside for pitchin',
But it's nothing like what you used to do
Now the time I'll love the best is when you'll be leavin-
We'd do better with off with Jason Hirsch, a long lost Jew.

When the time comes that I'm feelin angry,
And I'm feelin' ohooooo no- you'll also choke next against dodger blue,
I just sit back and think of you, only,
And the bitterness still comes through.

The Winner Of The Pride Goes East Scavenger Hunt

I know that guy. He's an imposter.

Pride Goes East: LES Special Scavenger Hunt, June 19, 2010

Tamara Greenfield tells all about this new and unique event that's part of Pride Goes East. The event was coordinated by the Fourth Arts Block.

Getting Worser All The Time

They used to be players with tools
Derek, Jorge & A-Rod were so young and so cool
No they're holding us down. Oh turning us round
Like a bunch of old men that just drool

I've got to admit it's getting worser (worser)
A little worser all the time (It can't get more worse)
I have to admit it's getting worser (worser)
Worser since Tex's average seems never to climb

We used to be eager young fans
With a manager that wasn't so bland
Cashman flipped us the bird, and we're looking like turds
And we're doing the worst that we can

I've got to admit it's getting worser (worser)
A little worser all the time (It can't get more worse)
I have to admit it's getting worser (worser)
Worser since AJ and Joba throw with nether reason or rhyme

Getting so much worser all the time
It's getting worser all the time
worser, worser, worser,
It's getting worser all the time
worser, worser, worser,

I'm Sitting On Top Of The World

At The Year of the Tiger Party for Fourth Arts Block
Cooper Square Hotel, June 17, 2010
For years, Manhattan artists have been fleeing to the outer boroughs, chasing the ever-receding rainbow of affordable rent. The artistic community on E 4th St, however, is still vibrant. In 2005, Mayor Bloomberg designated the area as an official Cultural District, and sold eight properties to various arts organizations for one dollar each, including the New York Theater Workshop, La MaMa and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Tonight's party in the penthouse of the Cooper Square Hotel benefits the so-called Fourth Arts Block, with performances by Sidra Bell Dance, palm readings, a fortune-cookie raffle, a silent auction and hors d'oeuvres from Faustina.
I'm sitting on top of the world,
Just rolling along
Just rolling along
I'm quitting the blues of the world
Just singing a song
Just singing a song
Glory hallelujah, I just phoned the parson
Hey, par, get ready to call
Just like humpty dumpty,
I'm going to fall
I'm sitting on top of the world
Just rolling along
Just rolling along

Happy Halladays

the original
Happy Holiday
Happy holiday, happy holiday
While the merry bells keep ringing
May your ev'ry wish come true
Happy holiday, happy holiday
May the calendar keep bringing
Happy holidays to you
Come To Holiday Inn
If you're burdened down with trouble
If your nerves are wearing thin
Park your load down the road
And come to Holiday Inn
If the traffic noise affects you
Like a squeaky violin
Kick your cares down the stairs
And come to Holiday Inn
The Yankee version
Happy Halladay
Happy halladay, happy halladay
While the homer balls keep soaring
May your ev'ry wish come true
Happy halladay, happy halladay
May the hitless phillies keep bringing
Happy halladays to you
Come To Halladay Inn
If you're burdened down with groin pulls
If your catchers are wearing thin
Park your load with the trainer
And come to Halladay Inn
If the lack of bench affects you
Like a squeaky violin
Kick some phillie butt and then strutt
And come to Halladay Inn

Ithaca Festival Parade June 3, 2010, part 2

from ithaca festival
A Volvo dons a tutu and performs elegant glissades down Cayuga Street. Not far behind, a book-loving caterpillar creeps and crawls, while a marching band playing chainsaws follows closely behind. What the heck is going on here? Why, it’s the Ithaca Festival Parade, of course! A much-beloved Ithaca Festival tradition, the Ithaca Festival Parade is irreverent, zany, and heavily self-referential. Dozens of community groups (both extant and ad hoc), local non-profits, performing artists, and businesses participate to make this one of the most memorable events of the year.
The Thursday night festivities begin at 6:00 with the Ithaca Festival Mile (come and cheer on the runners!), followed immediately by the parade. The parade route runs down Cayuga Street, starting in Fall Creek at Lewis Street and ends at Dewitt Park on Buffalo Street.
I was driving me crazy, but I finally figured out that the song they were playing was "Way Back Home" by the Crusaders

Vitamin L In Ithaca

Inspiring! I believe that Jan Nigro, who leads the group, is Laura Nyro's younger brother.

Welcome Back Javy Vazquez, Part 2

Welcome back,
Your loss to the sox was your ticket out.
Welcome back,
To that same old place where you suffered that painful rout
Well the names have mostly changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and it seems that your stuff has been newly found
Who'd have thought you would lead us (Who'd have thought you would lead us)
Here where fans put up such a fuss (Here where fans put up such a fuss )
Yeah we teased him a lot cause he started out like rot , but now he's found his rightful spot, welcome back,
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

The Three Ring Sign, The Olympic Rings, And Mark Tusheera

Purity, Body, Flavor were, of course, the famous "three rings" of Ballantine: "Make that three ring sign, Ask the man for Ballantine". ...
For Mark Texiera it was the three strike sign that he asked the ump man to ring up five times. For that he earned the Olympic Rings below
Who struck out 5 times today
Tusherra did it, bringing us tears
Who batted like he was a clown,
Tusherra did it, bringing no cheers
For a player that depresses you
Here's the only thing to do
Just look for the 3 ring sign and ask the man for ballantine
maybe Tex is just the new Giambino

I Like The Birds In June

The Yankees sweep the Orioles
I like the birds in June,
and how about hughes
I like when b-more swoons
and how about hughes
I love when mo sets down the side
when a save's in view
I like when jete gets hits
robbie on a torrid clip
and how about hughes
batters get good looks,
can't get my fill,
and that russo rook
gives me a thrill.
clapping hands when a-rod strikes a blow
and the o's feel real low
may not be new,
but I like it,
how about you?
