A luncheon at school to celebrate student essays on their favorite staff member. What Joel Klein's consultants don't understand is that the success of a school depends upon that magic mix of veterans and newbies, of paraprofessionals and school aides, of custodial staff, of parents, of community funded youth workers (here peacemakers hired through the Harlem Children's Zone) and especially of staff with community roots. Without that, no magic curriculum, no constant test preparation drills, no up to date bulletin boards or even an unlimited infusion of funding can work.
