This map comes from the Library of Congress site called American Memory.
I believe it is an 1879 map of Manhattan. In viewing many of these old maps I'm struck by how churches and other places of worship have been perennial landmarks. This is even more so when the churches have retained their steeples. In referencing the 7th Street story you can view St. Brigid's which is about a block west of 239. Those high steeples are no longer present. Currently the congregants of the church along with many neighborhood supporters are struggling to prevent the church's demolition. There is a foundation crack that would require a costly repair that is beyond the community's resources.
