Betty Smith, aka Francie Nolan, real name Elisabeth Wehner lived here(702 Grand Street) according to the U.S. census in 1910. Judging by the apartment numbers it looks like she might have lived on the top floor just like in the book version. Coincidentally, I ate in the restaurant on the ground floor two weeks ago while taking pictures in Williamsburgh.

Just wanted to say that I enjoyed your chronicle of Francie Nolan/Betty Smith's Williamsburg neighborhood. As someone who was fascinated by "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", I was seeking out information about some of the historic areas in the book. Great job, and thanks for giving us a glimpse into Betty Smith's childhood neighborhood.
