Jerry Stiller's Williamsburgh
The 8th graders visited the Tenement Museum today. They got there via a last minute cancellation by another school. I went into overdrive to help give them some background on the immigration theme since they weren't up to the topic it in their classwork. I even prepared an audio visual post museum walking tour/scavenger hunt for them but it had to be scrubbed since time did not permit. At least it's now part of the "archives" for future use. Here's some "outakes" with part of Jerry's autobiography of tenement days in Williamsburgh. Jerry would later move to the LES and join the Boys Club and attend Seward Park High School. From the tape (a sample is available at the King of Queens website) I learned that he lived at 131 Meserole Street. Amazingly, the house is still there, on a block where more than half the old buildings have been raised. It's also about 5 blocks away from where Betty Smith lived.
