This picture comes mostly from a special New York school edition of the 1896 Tribune. I got a copy of it from the
Special Collection at Columbia Teacher's College. This is where many of the archives of the school system are stored. The Tribune gives us a fascinating (and pretty much racist) view of the immigrant school children. This page comes from the passage written about PS13, the current location of the ABC Park on Houston Street. Aren't those German kids just great, so thorough, but not as quick as the Irish and Italians.
