By the sound of the cheers and screams, you'd think 86-year-old Eva Schwartz was some kind of celebrity. Well, she is at P.S. 361, the Children's Workshop in the East Village. “She’s really nice,” says one student. "Eva is really fun," adds a classmate.
Born and raised on the Lower East Side, Eva became a teacher's aide in 1962 at the same P.S. 361 where she now volunteers. Years passed, and in 1994, Eva decided to retire. But instead of throwing in the towel she continues to work at the school, volunteering five days a week, waking at 6:00 in the morning to help students and teachers get through the day.
