Which coast swings harder? Jazz musicians ceded East Coast/West Coast squabbles to hip-hoppers some time ago, but Midsummer Night Swing's season kickoff is a high-octane rematch that proves old feuds die hard. Ten years ago on a hugely successful tour, hometown Count Basie disciple George Gee and hot L.A. pianist Bill Elliott put the question to the most discerning audiences of all: dancers. The gauntlet has been thrown down once again. Come decide who gets bragging rights.I didn't stay till the end, but though Elliott's band was excellent I'd vote for Gee. His band played a great version of Hampton's Flying Home.
That's Sigourney Weaver at the 45 second mark. I'm a fan of the woman with the open toed pumps at 2:10. A heavy duty plastic surgery trio at 2:45.
