Midsummer Night Swing: June 29, 2010

Which coast swings harder? Jazz musicians ceded East Coast/West Coast squabbles to hip-hoppers some time ago, but Midsummer Night Swing's season kickoff is a high-octane rematch that proves old feuds die hard. Ten years ago on a hugely successful tour, hometown Count Basie disciple George Gee and hot L.A. pianist Bill Elliott put the question to the most discerning audiences of all: dancers. The gauntlet has been thrown down once again. Come decide who gets bragging rights.
I didn't stay till the end, but though Elliott's band was excellent I'd vote for Gee. His band played a great version of Hampton's Flying Home.
That's Sigourney Weaver at the 45 second mark. I'm a fan of the woman with the open toed pumps at 2:10. A heavy duty plastic surgery trio at 2:45.
